Foreign Languages

We offer Spanish and Mandarin classes for both our preschool and elementary children. Classes are held in an immersive environment and they expose children to a multifaceted experience that includes language, literature and culture. From the 2019-20 academic year, we will also begin some introduction to Sanskrit through our yoga and meditation program.

Many parents are interested in foreign languages for one or more of the following three reasons:
- they are not native English speakers and they have a different mother tongue
- they feel that early childhood is the best time to learn a foreign language or
- that it will help them later in life since a foreign language can help their children reach more people and a larger body of work.

While all of these are excellent reasons, there is yet another compelling reason to learn multiple languages. Physiological studies have shown that speaking two or more languages can actually change the wiring in the brain and significantly enhance the cognitive process. The brains of bilingual people have been found to operate differently from those of single language speakers.

For us, however, exposure to a  different culture and history through its customs, literature and language is the primary reason for including foreign languages in our program.
